9. Titles Used in Title Sequences, Research

Titles used in title sequences, Research

1.Titles super-imposed on a blank screen

This type of title is the cheapest and therefore, unsurprisingly, the most common. It is usually black words on a white background or vice-versa. It is very popular with movie studios due the the money it saves and it could be argued that it is also popular with directors as this is a very easy way to fulfil all the contractual obligations of the credits.

2. Titles accompanied with still images

Title sequences like this allow the screen to show both text and images. This, fortunately or unfortunately depending on your preference, means that the credits will be longer. This is because a lot more people now have to be credited; not just the studio and film-maker. This style of title sequences contributes more to the film as a whole. It is a form of convergent media as it consists of several types of media. One medium usually involved is music, music helps set the tone and combined with the images on screen it can foreshadow later events.

3. Titles with moving images

This is essentially credit titles with moving images behind titles. There is usually sound but no dialogue. It can work in two ways: one as a metaphor and two as a narrative thread. It's primary focus is to introduce tone or story-lines.

4.Titles built around animation and motion graphics

The 1990s marked the emergence of titles that also incorporated animation and motion graphics. This time titles actually moved with the images; everything was integrated. It is very expensive and quite a lengthy process as it includes a great deal of digital technology and stylised editing.
