29. Foley Sound (Task Two)
We created these foley sounds with the equipment that we had around us. We would like to apologise for some of the background chatter as we recorded most of these clips when the other groups in the class were doing the same thing as us.
We have ideas to use the stomping and key sounds in particular for our drama piece. They fit well with our rough idea of a married man returning home to ruins. The key sound effect can be used for when he drops his keys on the table and the stomping can be used as he travels through the house and witnesses the wreckage.
Making Sounds
Stomping - I (Leo) went outside of the room and stomped as heavily and rhythmically as I could. I stomped heavily so that the recorder could pick up my sound. This sound could be used as the husband walks into his home
Wiping - Rochelle scraped keys across the table t make the wiping noise.
Typing - we got the the typing sound from typing on the keyboard and recording it
Keys drop - we used Marie's keys to get the sound. We can use this as the husband drops his keys on the table upon reaching home.

29. Creating Sound (Task One With Sound Effects), Research
We can use this sound in our sequence when the husband is walking up the pathway to the home and is surveying all the damage done to the home by his psycho wife.
We can use the breaking glass sound when the wife is breaking the wedding photo in another room.
we can use the door open and close sound effect when the husband is entering the home unaware of the mess awaiting him.

Sound in a previous students work (28)

I found the use of music in this piece very effective. The whole track that was played throughout the sequence was a good soundtrack and it fit the tone and atmosphere of the sequence very well. The fact that the student was also in a studio like place singing the same song was also effective and the lyrics and rhythm of the song went will with the context of the piece.
Their use of foley sound was another good sound point. There was and amplified sound of the door being closed, also of his phone ringing which was played over the background track which was a good and effective idea. Without these sounds the piece wouldn't have been as effective. The track also brought a tense atmosphere especially when he walks past groups of teenaged boys.
Lastly, the foley sounds within the track for example, the police sirens also fitted with the whole theme of the sequence and let me know what the genre of the film was.

28. Sound in Other Groups, Research
The group I have chosen is Omari, Mara, Mart & Thomas.
I though they used some really interesting sound choices. They started filming outside and all the ambient sounds of driving cars created a sense of realism and relatability; it grounded everything from the very beginning. They transition to a man in man interrogation room and had a distant sound effect of a police siren which was really clever and effective.
Halfway through the video, sound become inaudible, I though this was brilliant it gives us an idea of how long and repetitive this interrogation has been.

27. Audience Profile, Research
Ideal Audience Member Profile
Gender: Male or (Mainly) Female
Age: 30+/ Senior Citizens
Status: Married/ Divorcee
Race: Any
We will aim to target women a bit more than men because women are more inclined to drama films than their male counterparts.Still, with this being said we do not want to completely isolate our male audience, males are also part of marriages and will be a able to relate to the things on screen just as much as women. Most sustainable marriages would be with those who are married and are 30 and over hence why a 30 year old is my minimum age. Since it would be a drama on marital problems it is only right that we target married and divorced men and women. Married people would be able to identify with the the things on screen and the divorced likewise.
Despite this, we would of course like to appeal to a number of different demographics and age groups. We hope that the runaway wife aspect could hopefully perk the attention of action/thriller lovers. it gives our film an edge and appeals to more than 30 year old husbands and wives.
YouGov tells me that mostly elderly women are interested in drama which is why senior citizens are also being targeted. They tend to not be as adventurous when it comes to cinema outings because so much of the market is targeted at younger people, so if we can attract them we could give our film a really unique edge. Also, since females are a big part of our target audience we want to emphasise the importance of our female lead. Although she will be omitted from our opening scene we want to give her a starring role in our overall film and not have her conform to typical gender stereotypes such as the damsel in distress.

26, Identifying Target Audience, Research
I conducted a quick survey to get an idea of who our target audience is. I wanted to know which King of age group we should be targeting, and which kind of genre is most popular between different age groups.
I wanted to ask more people nut because I am not a paying member in www.surveymonkey.com I was restricted to only being able to ask 2 people unfortunately.

24. Individual Idea / Outline for Title Sequence, Research
For my idea, the genre in which my title sequence will take place is Drama.
A convention of a drama film is that the character(s) and/or plot are all relatable and that everything is grounded. The plots of drama films usually tackle everyday problems. Taking all of this into account, my title sequence would start with the screen being pitch black. A quick cut will then take us to our first real image which will be a family picture which has fallen and the protective glass has cracked. To accompany the quick cut will be a sharp fleeting piano note. Another series of quick cuts will then ensue along with the same piano note. The second image will be of a spinning wedding ring on a table. The next shot would be a wide shot of a destroyed living room. The next shot would be a close up of a man walking. The final shot would be a close up of his hand taking the ring and putting it onto his finger.
The plot would be of a marriage that has become self destructive. The wife has mysteriously died and the husband is nowhere to be see. As one would expect he is the prime suspect but there is more to the story is one does not take it at face value. Social groups I could introduce in with a plot like this are in-groups, for the fugitive husband he would need someone to confide in, someone who listens to him, that would be in the in-group. There would be a formal group in the form of the police, who would lead the hunt and be integral parts of the story.

23. Groups Initial Creative Ideas, Research
A documentary is being made. A camera has been taken into a small village. In this village there is a small posT office situated at the very centre. In this post office is a drug ring masquerading as an everyday post office. Instead of sending mail and letters, they send drugs and illegal substances to their various buyers. The man in charge of the post office is named Edmundo Suarez. He is a respected member of the community, and does many charitable things. He is very popular and many wonder how a man who is in charge of a post office could have acquired such wealth. Nobody asks him because they respect him and majority of the community are living off him. There is also the small problem of majority of the city being on drugs. The citizens of the village are filling his pockets, they but drugs which are everywhere from the local dealers who all work under Suarez. Suarez then gives them back a fraction of their money in the form of a philantrophic rich man just doing his bit for the community. The drug obsession in this village is why this documentary is being made. It is quite fascinating in the 21st century that such a small village could have a booming economy all off drugs. The president of the country has forsaken the village, many speculate that Suarez and him are close and that he fears if he was too interrupt Suarez' covert dealings that it would end very badly for him and would not be to the benefit of the country.
Opening camera angle: Wide shot of the village, to establish setting
Foley sounds: birds tweeting, wind blowing, shop door opening and closing, citizens conversations, cars driving, gives it all a relatable feel
Music: Calm and serene, classical(maybe?), keep the audience in secrecy

22. Blogging Health Check, Research
Here is a screenshot of my ProMonitor, MyProgress Media Studies page.
Rebecca (my teacher) and I had a 1-to-1 where she gave me a progress grade and some feedback. My progress grade was a C, I was on 12/20 for my blogging. Reasons for this was because some of my blogs were brief and they had nothing unique to them. they were all every text based and lacked images and presentation. She advised me to use emaze and Prezi to spruce up my work and to go back to all my previous blogs and edit the ones that are too brief and add images to the ones that are too blank.
Ever since our meeting I feel that I have stepped up to the task. I have gone back to all of my previous works and tried to squeeze as much information as I could. I went back to previous works and added emaze to Prezi to some works and admittedly I can now say that I am much prouder about my work. I have also gone out of my own way to do some additional research and work on topics that interested me and upload them onto my blog

21. Evaluation, Research
The film opening that we decided to recreate was the opening of Collateral. The first thing we did was watch over the scene and try and put all the different scenes and shot types into a storyboard. To not down each shot wasn't too difficult but some problems arose due to the slow motion implemented, but it was nothing too troublesome. I feel that the storyboards were accurate enough and nothing was really missed out.
In terms of location and costume we ran into no obstacles. These two probably provided the group, well at least me, with the most fun. We went to go shoot at Kings Cross Station, where we knew there would be people. We chose not to shoot inside the station to avoid any problems, we shot outside the station which was fine because there was enough people walking around to make it seem as though it were the station in the actual movie. We used sunglasses from my home, they were not in the best condition but they got the job done. The location and costume impacted our film greatly, as it allowed it to be closer to the actual opening scene The bags we used were mines and Rochelle's, in hindsight we probably should have used a prop briefcase but it just did not occur to us at the time to ask for it. A briefcase would have been more in tune with the actual opening.
Creating title credits was not too hard. Once the group got a hang of how to work Premiere & After Effects. We just had to use out minds and think and we found the ways to do everything that we wanted to. When doing font, effects etc. we decided that it'd be best that we keep it consistent and linear. Meaning that we used the same font and effect on each title credit. The only thing that changed was colours, some colours suited other scenes better. The actual opening scene of Collateral had no title credits so it was all up to us and our imaginations to think of the best ways to do it. I feel that our colours and effects fit our tone.

" You are more or less up to date which is encouraging, particularly given that you've missed some parts of lessons.
What I need you to focus on now is getting this work up to the kind of standard I need to see if you want anything higher than a C grade. Targets for improvement:
1. You must have something 'visual' in each post (see the front page of the blogging checklist for this). You should be thinking about using prezi, emaze, padlet, thinglink or similar to show your work - you can then embed these applications into a blog post.
2. Go back over all your posts that don't have anything other than text or one image in the. You need to make sure that you have embedded gif files of images from films, sequences from films or jpegs from films. At the moment almost all of yours are entirely text based.
3. Organise to spend a minimum of 4 hours per week on your blogging work. Any less and you aren't putting in enough effort. For a B grade (15+) we expect a huge amount of analysis and detail - at the moment your posts, although complete, are too brief.
Come to lunchtime workshop for further guidance - every lunchtime in room 323. It's pretty easy to get this grade up but it will require a concerted effort from you. "

Audience Profile
profile of the ideal target audience member:
i used the you gov profiler to gather information about the people who view films similar to mine, in genre or theme:
i first looked at people who watch the movie gone girl, which inspired our film opening as it follows the same theme of a breaking marriage and a mysterious disappearance.
i also took note of the social media they use as this will be useful for advertising our film opening. this shows that they spend a lot of time online and watching tv, and also shows what magazines and newspapers they read and shows they watch, this is useful as it shows us where and when to advertise to this group of people.

Importance of sound in film (15)
Sound in film.
To conclude, I think the sound is important within a film. it helps you find out what is going on and what type of film you are going to watch. It can make you want to carry on watching or terminate watching. It makes the film more engaging and gives it a sense of reality.

Genre conventions summary (14)
Name of genre; Drama
- In sequences of a drama film camera shots tend to be quite far away and draw closer as we get more into the sequence. It may start as a birds-eye view or a long shot then ends up getting closer to the location or characters. Movement tend to follow the action or character(s) in whatever is happening.
- In a drama sequence cuts are made very quick and it switches from scene to scene. it may switch from action to action.
When watching the film 'One Day' clips switched from gang to gang.
The speed of the cuts and clips are average, not too fast and not too slow.
Not much special effects are involved in drama films as they tend to be realistic and a perception of reality which doesn't include too much special effects that may make the film look fake.
- In drama sequences the location is one of the main things we see in the opening. we may see the city or area in which the film takes place in. the main location are revealed for example, an estate, neighbourhood or prison may be seen.
Costumes are also seen. This depends on the characters involved. In the drama films I've watched their costumes mainly consisted of tracksuits, jeans and casual clothing.
Props can be included in the sequence and these can be things life guns and knives.
Lighting in a drama sequence is mainly natural lighting. This also perceives reality in realistic terms and tens not to use artificial lighting.
- In a drama sequence it is mainly Foley, ambient and diegetic sound. all sound is natural and the source may be visible on screen. Sound is also synchronous and relates to the clip being viewed on screen. Not a lot of sound effects are used to keep the clip realistic. Dialogue between characters may also be heard in the sequence.

Additional Work: The Importance of Sound
This blog post is to elaborate on my points in my importance of sound blog on the use of asynchronous sound and the omission of sound in movie fight scenes.
Asynchronous sound
Three famous uses of asynchronous sound that personally spring to mind are the use of asynchronous sound is the use of it in John Woo's 'Face-Off', and trailers for 'Maleficient' and 'Marvel's Avengers: Age Of Ultron'.
Face Off, in a bloody gun fight, sow motion is implemented and in the background a altered rendition of the famous cinematic ballad 'Over the Rainbow' sang by Judy Garland in none other than the timeless classic, The Wizard of Oz. The song usually inspires positive emotions but it is used in this scene to create a stunning contrast. It is supposed to catch out the audience as Woo would've expected majority of the audience to be familiar with the song and its connotations due to its ubiquity.
Maleficent trailer, the movie was a drastic retelling of the iconic Sleeping Beauty nemesis. It's goal was to make the audience sympathise with Maleficent and show that her evil is misunderstood and to a point justified. For the trailer, pop star Lana del Rey covered the animated movie's famous song 'Once Upon a Dream'. Once again, this is an example of an upbeat and cheerful song, del Rey toned it down to give it a more ominous and eerie feel. The familiarity of the song once again comes into play as Sleeping Beauty is one of the most famous animated pictures to come out of the Mouse House so they expect the audience to know the song and understand the desired effect.
Avengers; Age Of Ultron, the plot of this gargantuan superhero pic was that Tony Stark creates an AI system for the betterment of mankind, in goes rogue and becomes a problem that only the Avengers can stop. The theme is the movie is that titular villain, Ultron, is free ; 'he has no strings on him'. The quote is straight out of the Disney classic, 'Pinocchio' a puppet who is given life. Pinocchio sings he has no strings in a joyous manner but for the Avengers trailer it s much more depressing and downbeat. Here is yet another example of the film banking on the familiarity of the song so that the audience can easily grasp the effect.
Fight scenes
As I said, most movie fights are backed by a fast paced theme but two movies that stand out in my mind changed this. These movies are Paul Greengrass' 'the Bourne Ultimatum' and Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises'. They both have fantastically choreographed fight scenes but the omission of music accentuates the sound effects and Foley sounds and gives both fight scenes a rawness that cannot be found everywhere.

15. Importance of Sound, Research
Sound is a very important part of a film. It s something that is often overlooked, but if absent can be very telling. Legendary Star Wars director, George Lucas, remarked that 'sound is 50% [of the film].
Sound takes many forms when it is used in film. In a film there will be sound which is what you hear, eg character voices. There will also be a sound scape. The sound scape is all the things you hear. There will be sound design which is deliberately prepared sound that is used to achieved a desired effect for the movie.
Sound can be ambient noise in a movie, which can help ground a movie due to the repeatability of the sounds eg a moving train. Sound can take the form of a voice-over, which can help the audience understand a movie better due o the storied narration. Sound can be the score of a movie: scores are pieces of music specifically written for a movie. Some scores are synonymous with movies and their main characters, examples of this are James Bond & Indiana Jones, their scores are iconic and films in their respective franchises would be remiss to omit them from movies. Sound can also be used to great effect if used in a contrasting fashion. This is called - asynchronous sound, where the sound belies the images on screen.
Sound in movies can also help tell the story. They can help to foreshadow something happening or keep the audience engaged via things such as false-plateau's. False-plateau's are conventions of the thriller genre and help heighten tension.

14. Genre Conventions in Chosen Genre Openings, Research
The groups chosen genre is: Drama
The three Drama films I have chosen to study are:

The three Drama films I have chosen to study are:
- The Godfather
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Schindler's List
Conventions of a drama ( not specifically an opening) include, conflict being at the heart of the plot and relatable characters and situations.
The Godfather
The Godfather beings by showing the title of the movie and slowly transitioning into a close up of a character ( see first image). The character is deep into an engrossing monologue which revolves around family conflict which is a convention of the genre and would go on to be a central theme as the movie progresses. It was used to foreshadow. He feels a story that I feel many can relate to, he is a protective father who comes from a strict tradition and his daughter has become entangled in American culture. To please his daughter he compromises his ideals and allows her to some things that do not sit well with him, in the end it goes pear shaped. Family conflict is a daily thing and internal conflict between daughters and fathers are common. This allows it the man to become a relatable character to the audience as well as the situation.
The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption opens with a very interesting sound scape. Morgan Freeman's powerful narration gives the audience a brief introduction to the two main characters, himself (Red) & Andy Dusfrene. In the backdrop is the the hard hitting score and speaking over it is the character dialogue and ambient sound. We are told that our main character is heading to Shawshank prison on account of him murdering his wife and her lover. He allegedly killed them after catching them in the act. Lashing out in a fit of rage after witnessing such betrayal is something that us as emotional humans can relate to. Come the end of the movie, Dusfrene escapes as he is innocent and meets up with Red once he is released. Drama movies usually end happily and this is a prime example of that.
Schindler's List

Schindler's List begins with a family of Jews lighting two candles and reciting prayers and/or songs in Hebrew. Title credits ensue and the candle slowly burns out as the screen and ultimately the films transitions from colour into black and white. A convention on the drama genre is growth or character development of a character throughout the film. In the opening the Jews are free and are in prayer, the light represents this. The light fades as we are taken back to a time when they were persecuted. The scene acts as a mirror, to see how far the Jews have progressed from the situations they were once placed in.

| Name of film: Knocked Up |
Genre of film: Comedy
Micro analysis:
- Camera
The first shot is a long shot establishing the setting for the next few scenes. We then cut to a two shot of the two characters about to box, we soon find out that they are close friends and this two shot help establish that. We then cut to many medium shots introducing more members of the main cast. We cut to a low shot of the group dancing, this helps show the togetherness of the group and allows us to see very clearly how they all share something in common and are comfortable around each other.
- Editing
The opening shots have quick cuts and feature a lot of slow motion for comedic effect
- Mise-en-scene
set in reality, playful performance, casual drug use, profanity, roller-coaster rides, unprofessional clothing, fish bowl, swimming pool.
The audience can see that there is nothing supernatural about the setting. It is very ordinary and common. We are shown the characters who are dressed in casual clothing and are all indulging in drug use (one act features a fish bowl) . There performances are irreverent and facetious. We are also shown swimming pools and roller-coaster rides.

- Sound
There is loud, non-diegetic hip hop music. Over the music was playful dialogue which included swearing.
Macro analysis:
The plot isn't quite introduced in the opening scene. The plot of the movie is a man impregantes a woman he barely knows and must come to terms with being a father. In the opening we are introdcued to some of the main characters, they are a stereotypical group of misbehaving friends indulging in frivolous activities, from the characters and setting and the activities they are doing we can tell the plot will involve them causing trouble and be central around their bad decisions
The first characters to be established are the main characters and then the full friendship group, as the the storyline is central to these characters. Also the group is shown on a roller-coaster which may be foreshadowing the 'roller-coaster' of events they will encounter.
these charters are introduced through shots of their antics together, play fighting, casually taking drugs and enjoying themselves.
The social group established in this opening scene is a group of drug taking, fun loving adults.

12. Target Audience, Research
Group 18's chosen genre is Drama
A Target Audience is a particular group that a product or advertisement is aimed at.
Drama might just provide the broadest target audience out of all. It appeals to anyone from a teenage age and upwards. It is such a relatable and flexible genre that all can enjoy. A movie on school and street crime would appeal most to teenagers and adolescents whilst a movie on marriage problems or based in a courtroom would be more targeted at adults.
One you know what kind of dramatic film you are going for it becomes easier to know how to market it because you are now knowledgeable about who you are marketing it towards.
According to IMDb, Action is the most popular genre followed by crime and then fantasy.

Audience
- 15-24 year old attended the cinema more than any other age group in the UK
- Older audiences preferred to watch independent movies
- The genres most popular with men were: thriller, action & comedy
- The films that appealed most to women were: Frozen, About Time & One Direction This Is Us
- UK films appealed more to females rather than males
- The films most watched by ages 7-14: One Direction: This Is Us, Wreck-It-Ralph, Despicable Me 2, this tells us that animation has a great draw when it comes to kids and teenagers but also that kids and teenagers can flock to see from a completely different genre
- Adults went to go see more child-friendly movies because they ere most probably taking their child to see that movie and ended up watching it with them, this contributes to animation being so formidable financially as they will receive a lot of money as families go to see them as opposed to one person or two
- The films most popular with 25-34 year olds were: Django Unchained, Fast & Furious & Rush
- Films most popular with C1: Rush, Gravity & Captain Phillips
- With C2 the most popualr movies were: Oz the Great & Powerful, Fast & Furious 6 Despicable Me 2
- There is a huge difference as to the most popular films in London & Scotland, Londoners seems to be more inclined towards the blockbusters whilst Scots were more into the indie fare
Target audience (12)
Target Audience
The assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such
as a play, film, concert, or meeting.
Primary – the main audience who has direct interest in the
product.
Secondary – product is not directly directed at them but
they view it due to their children family or friends.
Tertiary – slightly interested due to knowledge within it
but wouldn’t normally view it.
A target audience is a
particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed.
- It’s useful for a film to have a target audience
so it draws in a certain crowd. It’s easier to direct a film at a certain group
of people then to aim it at everyone which could be rather tricky. A film will
have certain features that aim at the target group. For example, you could not
have adult themes in a children’s animation; the same way you can’t have children’s
humour in an adult film.
- I think comedies and
action are
appealing to teenagers and adults due to the humour and some of the
violence or activities involved in them. I think romance appeals to the older
age or to females in particular because they are normally emotional. Children will
stay appealed to cartoons and animations due to the colours and the language is
easily understood by them. I think males are more into goory film including
blood and violence and females are into happy films due to different Interests.10. Genre, Research
