6. Analysing Title Sequences, Research

Analyzing title sequences, Research

The three movie titles I decided to analyze were: 22 Jump Street, Moon & Quantum of Solace. All three of them were very distinct and different in their own ways.

22 Jump Street

The title sequence for 22 Jump Street is very comedic and humorous.  It parodies future sequels posters, in the background is a loud, non-diagetic pop song it is very colorful and conveys a very positive and vibrant atmosphere. The director(s) were the first to receive a casting credit, followed by the screenwriters, story writers, produces and the director of photography. The two main co-stars get the first of the actor credits, after them comes the rest of the cast. To round it all off, the directors get the final credit, stylized as 'a film by'.

Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace opens with fast paced animation, playing in the back is a song which was specially made for the film. The first to get a credit is the production company, followed by the main actor and the name of the character he is playing. This is followed by the movie title. We now follow an animated travelling bullet and around it the rest of the cast members are named but no the names of their characters; unlike with the main. As the animation continues we are met with a variety of bright shiny colours, a main focus of the animation are silhouettes of women and the female shape. More behind the screens members are mentioned such as the camera operator, script supervisor, 2nd unit Director of Photography, main title designer. After this, we are finally given the name of the movie, next up are the credits for the screenwriters, producers and to round it all off - the director.

Moon

The movie starts with an ad presenting documentary like footage. The narration/voice-over show many parts of the world, smiling children and seem to be speaking about an agenda to make the world some sort of utopia. In the ad scientific diagrams are shown and then the name of the company is given. We then cut to a man on a spaceship exercising. The production company are then credited along with the main actor. We then are given the location of where out character is.Next we are shown the moon and credits of the cast, All of this is back-set with unsettling almost ominous non-diagetic music. Whenever the actor is speaking the music is toned down to allow the actor's voice to be heard clearly.
