Sound is a very important part of a film. It s something that is often overlooked, but if absent can be very telling. Legendary Star Wars director, George Lucas, remarked that 'sound is 50% [of the film].
Sound takes many forms when it is used in film. In a film there will be sound which is what you hear, eg character voices. There will also be a sound scape. The sound scape is all the things you hear. There will be sound design which is deliberately prepared sound that is used to achieved a desired effect for the movie.
Sound can be ambient noise in a movie, which can help ground a movie due to the repeatability of the sounds eg a moving train. Sound can take the form of a voice-over, which can help the audience understand a movie better due o the storied narration. Sound can be the score of a movie: scores are pieces of music specifically written for a movie. Some scores are synonymous with movies and their main characters, examples of this are James Bond & Indiana Jones, their scores are iconic and films in their respective franchises would be remiss to omit them from movies. Sound can also be used to great effect if used in a contrasting fashion. This is called - asynchronous sound, where the sound belies the images on screen.
Sound in movies can also help tell the story. They can help to foreshadow something happening or keep the audience engaged via things such as false-plateau's. False-plateau's are conventions of the thriller genre and help heighten tension.
